I played along-side Gary in the band for many years.  He was one of the craziest guys I ever knew.  But he had a good heart, a whacky sense of humor, and an innate ability to have fun under almost any circumstances.

He took care of his mom until she passed away.  I sure do hope someone was there to take care of him.

Rest in peace, my friend.  See if you can get Gabriel to teach you some licks.

Gary was a great friend. Ran into him iat the Madison Art Fair at the Capital when I was in Med School. He was doing all kinds of cool woodwork with reclaimed barn boards. Got to relive a bunch of great memories from messing with the "CB Patrol" during Halloween to getting reprimanded at the Police Station for our foray into fake Wisconsin IDs. I worked at his Dad's gas station and he would come down in the evening just for some chat time between pumping gas, chnging oil, tuneups, etc.

Tom:
I was part of that “round-up” at the police department.  Gary used his talent as a photographer for The Antigonian to get a pretty realistic-looking ID card.  My dad’s very good friend was the chief of police.  He called about 15 of us down to turn in our fake ID cards.  On the way out the door he told me if he ever caught me with a fake ID again he’d tell my dad.  My other memory of Gary is that he also was an owner of a VW Beetle.  Gary, Dave Hunerdosse and I often compared our Beetles and his was the best.  RIP.

Scared the crap out of me for sure. I think everyone's Dad knew most of the police force. My step-dad was a former Wisc State Patrol officer.

Tom:  Congrats on making the Antigo Journal last week.  Your appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy was cited from 1969.  It was interesting to see that you were initially nominated by Mel Laird and that Dave Obey had a role as well.  Your political roots are impressively bi-partisan.  I recall Cong. Laird being named Sec. Of Defense by President Nixon.  Dave Obey defeated Walter John Chilean for the congressional district seat.

Thanx Roger,

Dont know if it had anything to do with it but my aunt and Laird were friends in college. I was also selected for Annapolis and Colorad Springs but chose Kings Point.
